Being Cautious

Protesters at the courthouse in Aswan.

Like everyone we have been following the mid-east news, a very disheartening situation. The conflict broke out after our departure, since the situation in Egypt seemed stable we decided to continue. We are glad we did and are having a great time. Before leaving we registered with the U.S. State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) program to receive alerts for situational changes, we did get one when the conflict started and a second one yesterday warning of possible large demonstrations. As we were returning to the boat yesterday we saw protesters on the steps of the courthouse in Aswan. So far that is the extent of it. All the communications from the State Department say:

  • Avoid areas of demonstrations.
  • Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.
  • Monitor local media for updates.
  • Keep a low profile.

Since it is just the two of us and a guide (plus a driver maybe) this is pretty easy to follow. I promised Kim I would not do any late night wanderings like I have on other trips and I am sticking to it. When we asked our guides have told us they are seeing cancelations and they are upset about it. Overall they feel Egypt is safe and no different from the way it was before the conflict. I hope it stays that way.
